the group test. For the UK and most of Europe, this dish is ideal for use for TV channels on Astra at 19E.
ADVICE - Triax dishes have a folding boom arm. The one shown above is an 80cm but the 60, 80, & 90cm are the
same. Most specialist caravan dishes are too small. If the dish is to be used throughout Europe and the UK,
it needs to be at least 60cm diameter - you cannot change the laws of Physics! Small caravan dishes do NOT work.
Finding this out on the camp site is not an ideal situation. Here are some recommendations - UK, Northern France
(e.g. Normandy), Holland, Northern Germany: - use a 60cm solid or clear dish. (A Sky mini dish is at least 10%
smaller than ideal even for the UK !! It is only small to make it look unobtrusive, however, as it does not fold
and mesh tends to be easily dented or bent so it is not ideal for a caravan / portable use.) Paris : - use an 60-80cm.
South of France : - use an 80 - 90cm. Spain : - Tune to the south beam and use an 60-80 anywhere. The north beam
in Spain : - Costa Brava, 90cm - Madrid 1.1-1.2m The South of Spain, 1.1 to 1.2 - Alicante 2.4m (for more details
see SPAIN) Northern Italy : - 1.0m but may not get all channels. 1.2m for all channels. (you could use a 90 cm
and get some channels but maybe not the lower power ones.) Storage : - Lie dish on bed (or in boot) when
traveling. On site slide under caravan until you are ready to set it up. That way it is never in the way.
We strongly advise customers to set up their caravan kit in their garden before going away. It is important
to practice setting it all up and solving problems at home when it does not matter if there are learning delays.
The 1.0m aluminium dish (see below) kit is probably the largest dish you can realistically carry so use this for
southern Spain or Northern Italy. You may not receive all of the channels but you should receive a good selection.

How does the Vu Cube work?
In the days of analogue, it was possible to find the satellite quickly without needing a meter.
Just point the dish south and with an offset dish, make sure the face of the dish is approx. vertical
Move the dish right and left and a little up and down and the picture appeared on the tv in a
couple of minutes. In the days of digital this is not possible as there is a 3 or 4 second
delay in the digital signal. That means with the dish connected to the satellite receiver
and the receiver connected to the TV, assuming again you can see the TV from where you are
adjusting the dish, the dish has past the satellite before the signal appears on the TV screen.
That is why you need a satellite meter when using a tripod dish kit.
The VuQube gets round these problems in a very novel way. First the up and down variable is removed.
The dish in the Qube has self leveling and the elevation for your location is entered into the
handset from a chart. That means when you go right and left you WILL go through the satellite you
are looking for. Then three other factors help you -
1. The handset tells you the satellite is either east or west of the correct location on the dish
You only have to move in one direction to find it.
2 & 3. The dish has a wide acceptance angle and the motor moves slowly.
That means the dish sees the satellite long enough for it to appear on the TV.
All of this is time consuming to explain, but in practice, using the handset,
the satellite is located in under 2 minutes without needing a meter.

How does the Vu Dome work?
In the days of analogue, it was possible to find the satellite quickly without needing a meter.
Just point the dish south and with an offset dish, make sure the face of the dish is approx. vertical
Move the dish right and left and a little up and down and the picture appeared on the tv in a
couple of minutes. In the days of digital this is not possible as there is a 3 or 4 second
delay in the digital signal. That means with the dish connected to the satellite receiver
and the receiver connected to the TV, assuming again you can see the TV from where you are
adjusting the dish, the dish has past the satellite before the signal appears on the TV screen.
That is why you need a satellite meter when using a tripod dish kit.
The Vudome gets round these problems in a very novel way. First the up and down variable is removed.
The dish in the Dome has self leveling and the elevation for your location is entered into the
handset from a chart. That means when you go right and left you WILL go through the satellite you
are looking for. Then three other factors help you -
1. The handset tells you the satellite is either east or west of the correct location on the dish.
You only have to move in one direction to find it.
2 & 3. The dish has a wide acceptance angle and the motor moves slowly.
That means the dish sees the satellite long enough for it to appear on the TV.
All of this is time consuming to explain, but in practice, using the handset,
the satellite is located in under 2 minutes without needing a meter.

We tested this unit in Northern England (Newcastle) and it worked perfectly on Astra 2.
After switching on, it found the satellite in about 1 minute. In the north the signal is
lower than in the south so this unit is fine for all of England. The manufacturer's footprint
maps show the unit working on all channels from the north of Scotland to (almost) the south
of France. On the Mediterranean coast in the south of France you may lose a few channels.
This unit can by put through the roof window (if large enough) onto the roof of a caravan
or motorhome. A very common position to deploy it is on a table in the awning pointing through
an opening in the side or front of the awning. The suction feet have jacks so that it is

How big a dish can I carry in Spain?

The biggest dish we do with a folding arm is the Triax TD 88 90cm dish.
This will work in most of Europe including southern France but will struggle Spain,
only working North of Barcelona on all channels. It will work in all of Spain on some
channels but the weakest channels are the BBC and ITV and they really need a 1.0m dish
by the time you get to Barcelona and bigger even further south.
We have sold the excellent 1.0m Aluminum Funke dish to tourers in Spain as this dish
is light and quite easy to carry but it does not have a folding arm and 4 bolts need
taking out to remove the reflector. Buying some wing nuts will make this process faster.
The Triax 1.1m dish which might work on the weakest channels as far south as Madrid
is a big heavy dish to carry and could, with some modification have a folding arm.
The arm does fold like the TD 88 but the reflector would need cutting with a hacksaw
above where the arm comes through to give it the clearance to fold without the reflector
getting in the way. It will fold if this modification is done.
